Wasserstein's first play, Any Woman Can't, was produced off broadway in 1973 by Playwrights Horizons. Wasserstein continued to have further association with this non-profit theater group. Playwrights Horizons nurtured playwrighting talent, and Wasserstein found much work with this group. After her first off broadway production, Wasserstein decided to continue her studies in the fine arts. she entered Yale University's school of drama, where she began to work together with other new playwrights. During her years at Yale she worked with David Hollister on a musical, Mont Pelier Pa-Zazz, which was produces by Playwrights Horizons in 1975. Wasserstein also wrote for the Yale Cabaret group in 1977 with well known playwright Christopher Durang. Wasserstein earned her masters degree in 1976. Wasserstein's first major success, Uncommon Women and Others, opened as a full scale off broadway production by the Phoenix theater company in November 1977, at the Marymount Manhattan Theater. Her next theatrical success was, Isn't It Romantic, which opened in May 1981 off broadway at the Phoenix Theater. Unhappy with the plays reviews, Wasserstein revised her work and the show was re-opened at the Phoenix Theater in December 1983. Wasserstein was happy with her revisions and so were the cridicts. Isn't It Romantic moved to a large off Broadway theater and ran 733 performances. During the mid-80's, Wasserstein produced two teleplays for the Public Broadcasting System. She produced, The Sorrows of Gin, by John Cheever for the Great Performances Series. Wasserstein also wrote a short play, Drive She Said, for the series Trying Times. Wasserstein Began work on her most notable and successful play, The Heidi Chronicles, in 1986. The Heidi Chronicles received very good reviews when it opened at Playwrights Horizons. The Heidi Chronicles went on to win the Tony Award, the Pulitzer Prize for Best Play of the 1988-1989 season. The Heidi Chronicles moved from off broadway to the Plymouth Theater where it stayed for a long Broadway run. Wendy Wasserstein is an amazing woman Playwright from the 20th century. Her works and efforts have made a large impact on the way women playwrights are viewed.
