The Washington Post describes Linda Chavez as one of "a new generation of intellectuals [seeking] to question the orthodoxies of the civil rights establishment." Chavez is President of the Center for Equal Opportunity, and is a director of Greyhound Lines, Inc. and ABM Industries, Inc. She has held a number of political positions, including White House Director of Public Liaison in 1985. She won the Republican nomination for U.S. Senator from Maryland in 1986, but lost in the general election. Many know Chavez from her syndicated newspaper column and her writings for other publications, including the Wall Street Journal, The New Republic, the Washington Post, and Reader's Digest. She makes regular television appearances on 'The McLaughlin Group', 'CNN & Co', and 'The News Hour with Jim Lehrer'. Her book 'Out of the Barrio: Toward a New Politics of Hispanic Assimilation' chronicles the story of Hispanic progress and achievement and addresses the implications of bilingual education, voting rights, immigration, and affirmative action. She is currently working on her second book, which will deal with the impact of feminism on social policy. In January 2001, she had been selected by President- Elect George W. Bush to be Labor Secretary but later withdrew her name for confirmation.
