Elise NeeDell Babcock has been a woman on a mission since her teenage years. After losing a childhood friend to cancer in 1974, she turned her abundant energy to addressing the emotional side of catastrophic disease. In 1982, she founded Cancer Counseling, assembling an impressive staff of psychologists, social workers and psychiatrists to provide counseling for cancer patients and families. As president, Babcock presented training sessions for staff members of hospitals, nursing and medical schools, teaching how to improve care. Babcock is author of When Life Becomes Precious (Bantam, 1997), a step-by-step guide to navigating some of life's most turbulent waters. Her lectures on managing long-term disease in the workplace, improving healthcare and medical ethics have been popular with Fortune 500 corporations, medical schools, healthcare organizations and women's groups.
