As a nationally renowned orator, Bernice A. King has inspired thousands from all walks of life. In 1980, at age 17, she spoke in her mother's stead to the United Nations on Apartheid, thus realizing her oratorical gift. The youngest child of Mrs. Coretta Scott King and the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Bernice King is remembered by most as the five year old in the Pulitzer Prize photograph taken of her as she lay in her mother's lap during her father's funeral.
As a child, she dreamed on becoming both a lawyer and politician, but God had yet another road for her to travel. It was at age 17 that she first heard "His call,"but it wasn't until eight (8) years later, on March 27, 1988, that she formally accepted "the call" by preaching her first trial sermon at Ebenezer Baptist Church. She was ordained two years later in May of 1990. She holds a B.A. degree in psychology from Spelman College and on the morning of her Ordination, she was not only awarded a Master of Divinity degree, but also a Doctorate of Law degree from Emory University. Ms. King has received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Wesley College.
Named one of the "Ten Leaders of Tomorrow" by Ebony magazine, her powerful and animated speaking style is astonishingly evocative of her late father's. King's first book, Hard Questions, Heart Answers: Sermons and Speeches, was selected by USA Today as a "Best Bet." She is also the co-author of King Among the Theologians.
